The hamlet of Plainville is located about 10
km
north-east of Nogent-le-Rotrou and just over 2
km
from Marolles-les-Buis.
A large farm is located there, as well as a wooded hill which descends abruptly to the south and east towards the
Vinette
, a tributary of the
Bell
, itself flowing into the
Huisne
.
Halfway up, caves open out leading to old underground quarries: this site, far from the main thoroughfares, with access to the river, was retained by the maquisards who benefited from strong ties in the region , notably in
Saint-Hilaire-des-Noyers
, commune of Saint-Denis-d'Authou, whose inhabitants provided the canteen.

History
The Maquis of Plainville was formed on June 15, 1944 and ended with the liberation of Nogent-le-Rotrou on August 11, 1944
1
.
The maquis is led by Captain Gabriel Herbelin (
La Saucelle
, 1907 -?), Aka
Duroc
according to his code name in the Résistance.
The Eure-et-Loir being divided into 4 sectors, Herbelin is responsible for
the western sector
, comprising the
arrondissement of Nogent
plus the cantons of
Brezolles
,
La Ferté-Vidame
,
Senonches
,
Courville
and
Illiers
RG 1
.
In his manuscript of December 30, 1944, Raymond Gohon
RG 2
lists 133 combatants by name and the overall number is estimated at 160

Sabotage and destruction
The most significant requests concern the destruction of the
Paris-Brest railway line
which passes through Nogent-le-Rotrou and the telephone line connecting these same two cities.
Liberation of Nogent-le-Rotrou
Plaque in Nogent-le-Rotrou, 41 rue Gouverneur.
The most famous action of the Plainville maquis is the liberation of
Nogent-le-Rotrou
on
August
11
,
1944
, 3 days before the arrival of the
Allies
on
August
14
,
1944
.
In his "novel"
Le temps de Chartres
, Maurice Clavel gives a description that remains to be confirmed:
Duroc
, challenged by his men, succeeds thanks to
Sinclair
in restoring his authority and ends up taking prisoners, alone, all the occupants of the town hall
MC 1
.
Tribute
In Nogent-le-Rotrou, a plaque affixed 41 rue Gouverneur pays tribute to four combatants of August 11, 1944 "killed in the face of the enemy", one of whom, Robert Fonteix, is cited by Gohon as being part of the Maquis of Plainville
