Forty-second President of the United StatesWILLIAM JEFFERSON CLINTON
1993 – 2000
A former Rhodes Scholar who earned degrees from both Georgetown University and Yale Law School, William “Bill” Clinton was elected governor of Arkansas in 1978. Nominated for president by the Democratic Party in 1992, Clinton soundly defeated Republican incumbent George Bush, Sr. During his first term, he responded to various issues, including healthcare and welfare reform, as well as a balanced budget. He also enacted far-reaching crime legislation, such as the Brady Bill, which bans assault weapons. Re-elected in 1996, Clinton continues to address the concerns of the American people. He instituted family leave and promoted a national service program that lowers the cost of student loans, making college more affordable. Clinton also supported the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), lowering U.S. barriers with Mexico and Canada. In foreign policy, Clinton continued to promote peace in Bosnia and the Middle East.
