    Description

    Presented is a

(medal pkg. unopened) large 3” BRONZE medal produced by the United States Mint to celebrate the 200th anniversary (1792-1992) of the
    Coinage Act of 1792.
This Act authorized the development of United States coinage (copper half cent, cent; silver half dime, quarter, half dollar, dollar; gold quarter eagle, eagle) and the construction of a national minting facility in Philadelphia.
In March 1793, the Mint delivered its first circulating coins: 11,178 copper cents.
    The
    obverse design
replicates the “Inspecting the Coins” scene from a John Ward Dunsmore (1914) oil painting.
Martha Washington inspects a tray of newly minted coins held by Mint Chief Engraver Henry Voight.
Some others standing in the foreground in the scene are Mint Director David Rittenhouse, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington and Alexander Hamilton (with wife).
    The
    reverse design
features a series of 15 coins that provide a reflection of U.S. coinage through the years starting with the 1792 silver center cent to the 1992 American Eagle 1/4 oz. gold coin.
