SEALING WAX DOES NOT CONTAIN WAX
In medieval times, when the principal use
of sealing wax was for sealing official
documents, it was made of turpentine,
beeswax and colouring matter. Nowadays.
shellac is used instead of beeswaxand
the chief use of it is not for sealing docu-
ments but for making dry batteries. For
best quality sealing wax today bleached
lac is employed instead of shellac and
perfume is added. Ordinary sealing wax
contains chalk, carbonate of magnesia
and other earthy substances. In some
cheaper qualities ordinary rosin is sub-
stituted for lac. In making sealing wax
the lac and turpentine are melted together
in a copper or earthenware pot over a
moderate fire and the colouring is slowly
stirred in. The mixture is then poured
into moulds to form sticks.
