Nineteenth President of the United StatesRUTHERFORD B. HAYES
1877 – 1881
The election of 1876 was one of the most unique in the annals of American history. Quiet and reserved, Rutherford B. Hayes – unknown to voters outside his native Ohio – ran as the Republican candidate for president against the popular Democratic candidate, Governor Samuel J. Tilden of New York. After the campaign, even many Republicans thought Tilden would win. On election night, Tilden retired for the night believing he had won And, indeed, he had secured more popular voters. But the electoral votes of three Southern states were disputed. Four months after the election, Hayes – with 186 electoral votes to Tilden’s 185 – won the presidency. During his administration, Hayes withdrew federal troops from the South, returned America to “hard money” and endeavored to eliminate the “spoils system” of office appointment.
