THE ROCK OF GIBRALTAR
For 250 years the Rock of Gibraltar has
been a symbol of British poweryet it is
slowly sinking ! At one time, the Rock
was under the sea ; later, it was 700 ft.
above sea-level. At that time it was an
island, not connected to Spain. Then it
rose further (the summit now being 1,396
ft. above sea-level) and is now connected
to the mainland. Its movement downward
is calculated to be about 1 ft. in 100 years,
so that it would be 130,000 years before it
disappearsif it continues to sink and at
the present rate. Such movements are
mainly due to variations in the pressure
from inside the earth. When the pressure
in a given area falls, that part of vhe earths
surface sinks.
