    Description

Thirty-seventh President of the United States
    RICHARD M. NIXON
    1969 -1973
Elected president in 1968, Richard Nixon wanted to heal the domestic wounds caused by Vietnam. He came to the presidency after serving as a U.S. senator from California and as Dwight Eisenhower’s vice president. Defeated by John F. Kennedy in the 1960 presidential election, Nixon won in 1968 and again in 1972. During his first term, he ended the military draft and watched with other Americans as astronaut Neil Armstrong walked on the Moon. Successfully ending American involvement in Southeast Asia, Nixon also improved relations with the Soviet Union and opened friendly dialogue with China. But his second term was rocked by a series of scandals. One forced the resignation of Vice President Spiro Agnew. The Watergate debacle ultimately spelled Richard Nixon’s fall as well.
