Description
This very rare and historic Herzl medal was made soon after his death in 1904 as a memorial to the founder and first leader of Zionism. It is in very nice condition, with all lettering and images extremely sharp. There are no discernable marks or scratches, but an early fingerprint shows on the front, as well as glimmers of its original gilding on both sides. In all, this example is as nice as the medal ever appears. The obverse shows a left-facing bust of Herzl with his name, year of birth and date of passing, and Biblical except in Hebrew below, "If I forget thee O Jerusalem may my right hand forget its cunning". The dramatic reverse highlights a biblical image of Moses looking forth (at Canaan); immediately above and below are the names of two of Herzl's works, "[Der] Juden Staat" ("The Jewish State"), punctuated by a 'Zion' emblem, and "Altneuland" ("Old-New Land"). Around the upper and lower edges are Herzl’s quotations: "The Jews should be Jews and remain Jews" and "If you will it is no dream". The portrait of Moses looking forward copies the cover of Herzl’s famous book, Altneuland. (A picture of this cover is shown here, but not included with the medal.)
