    Description

Rare bronze coin Assarius Anthony Pius, Tyre, 2nd century BC.
Antoninus Pius - Roman emperor, who ruled from July 10, 138 to March 7, 161. The fourth of five good emperors.
Antoninus Pius came from a Gallic senatorial family. In 120 he was consul, then proconsul of Asia. In 135 he was adopted by Emperor Hadrian and became his successor. After the death of Hadrian, Antoninus persuaded the senate to deify Hadrian, and therefore the senators called him Pius (that is, "pious", "fulfilling duty in relation to the gods and relatives").
During the reign of Antoninus Pius, the Roman Empire retained its possessions and strengthened its borders. By his order, a new defensive rampart was built in Scotland from the Firth of Clyde to the Firth of Forth, and the state borders in Germany and Rezia were advanced and fortified. However, the uprisings against Roman rule that broke out in the provinces of Britain, Mauretania, Egypt and Judea meant the end of stability soon. Antoninus Pius adopted Marcus Aurelius, married him to his daughter Faustina, and proclaimed him emperor.
Since 139, Antoninus Pius bore the title "Father of the Fatherland"
