    RARE 1864 CAMPAIGN MEDAL FOR MAJOR GENERAL GEORGE MCCLELLAN NGC MS 62 #CB73-10
    Up for bidding: A rare 1864 silver campaign metal MS 62 grade of Major General George B. McClellan. George is best remembered as the general who presided over the Union Victory at Antietam and also the one general who was to cautious in battle. This was the second coin design which features an American eagle atop of a rock and Union shield vanquishing a copperhead snake. Copperheads were the nicknames given to people of the North who supported the Confederate cause. This is a one of a kind rare coin and a must have for any coin collection! Political and Campaign tokens were quite popular throughout the 19th century and reached their peak of popularity in the 1860's. This particular token was struck circa 1864 and was for the campaign of George B. McClellan. It is struck in white metal and has a diameter of 31mm. The best reference material for these tokens is American Political Badges and Medalets, 1789-1892 by Edmund B. Sullivan. It is the revised edition of the book A Century of Campaign Buttons 1789-1889 by J. Doyle DeWitt which was published in 1959. Dewitt's name is now used by NGC as the beginning of each variety of these tokens. For example, this token is designated DEWITT-GMcC-1864-6.
