VESUVIUS
Vesuvius, at the eastern end of the Bay of
Naples, Italy, is the only active volcano on
the mainland of Europe. (Etna is on an
islandSicily). Until the year A.D. 79
Vesuvius was regarded as an ordinary
mountain. But in that year the top was
blown off in the famous eruption that
buried Pompeii and Herculaneum to a
depth of 20 ft. in hot ashes and boiling
mud. Since then Vesuvius has often
erupted. It was not, however, until the
year of the Norman Conquest of England,
1066, that Vesuvius threw out its first lava.
Its height is now about 4,000 ft., and the
main crater is a quarter of a mile wide and
500 feet deep in places. Tourists can walk
around inside the crater at times.
