Description
This is a 1931 medal of tribute to the solo flight of Charles A. Lindbergh. It was designed by painter/sculptor Frederick William MacMonnies. He was born in 1863 and died in 1937. He is best known for his charming sculptures. He studied under St. Gaudens, famous sculptor, in Paris. This medal is in several large museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It is 2-7/8 inches in diameter or 7.3 centimeters. The pamphlet that accompanies it is produced by the artist and is in good condition for it's age with a fold to the cover. Auction prices have been in the area of 0. Weight of the medal on a postal scale is 7.8 oz. There are 1,989 known bronze versions and 250 silver versions. Some of the bronze medals are not gold leafed and have a brown color according to the information from the Metropolitan museum. It is from my father's small collection of monies and exonumia, given to me prior to his passing in 1990.
