Description
Eighth President of the United StatesMARTIN VAN BUREN
1837 – 1841
Fastidious in dress and courtly in manner, Martin Van Buren was the son of a New York tavernkeeper and farmer. Van Buren went to the U.S. senate in 1821 as a strong supporter of Andrew Jackson. The reward for his loyalty was the formal position of secretary of state and the informal position of Jackson’s trusted advisor. Jackson’s running mate in 1832, Van Buren was elected chief executive in 1836. He assumed the office during an era of American prosperity, but in 1837 a financial panic – due in large part to Jackson’s economic measures – plunged the land into a depression. Scores of banks and businesses failed. To maintain national solvency, Van Buren reduced expenditures and opposed the creation of a second Bank of the United States. Concerned over the spread of slavery, he also blocked the annexation of Texas. Van Buren was defeated as a Democrat in 1840 and again in 1848 as a Free-Soil candidate.
