    Description

Thirty-sixth President of the United States
    LYNDON B. JOHNSON
    1963 – 1969
Lyndon B. Johnson took the oath of office for the presidency aboard Air Force One, only hours after John F. Kennedy died. A popular senator from Texas before he was Kennedy’s running mate in 1960, Johnson dreamed of an America “where the meaning of man’s life matches the marvels of man’s labor.” As president, he successfully sponsored legislation that increased aid for education, provided for urban renewal and a rejuvenated space program. His sweeping civil rights legislation also offered African Americans more opportunities. But America’s participation in the Vietnam conflict turned public opinion against Johnson. After peace talks were underway in 1968, Johnson decided not to seek a second full term and in 1969 retired to his beloved ranch in Texas. He died at his home on January 22, 1973.
