This beauty is apparently approx. 200 years old and is a large antique bronze medallion in commeration of the passing of the Duc De Barry and as a homage to the Bourbons in general. It is a medallion praising the royalists, Even after the French Revolution... and up to today, there are French who still would like to see France with a king.
Of interest on one side is a mournful woman leaning over a tomb which is inscribed with royalty, in particular Louis XVI, Louis XVII, and Marie Antoinette...…. along the top border of the medallion reads "Je pleure le passe…. J'espere en l'avenir".. which translates as " I cry for the past... I hope for the future". At the bottom reads "A la memoire des Bourbons qui ont peri sous le fer des assassins" which translates as " To the memory of the Bourbons who perished under the iron of the assassins". The urn held by the woman reads " CF Duc de Berry 14 fev 1820".
The reverse shows St Michael standing on a slain dragon while holding a sword that pierces the dragon's head. Opposite St Michael is a female form holding a cross, representing the church. Along the upper border reads " La religion l'eclaire… La foi combat pour lui". This translates as " Religion enlightens..... The faith fights for him".
At bottom reads " Nous jurons de mourrir pour nos princes legitimes"…. which translates as "We swear to die for our legitimate princes".
It is beautifully sculpted and represents the Royalist movement in the first quarter of the 1800's .. ..still quite strong following the putting to death of Louis and Marie Antoinette.
It is in very good condition and its size is impressive, measuring approx. 2 1/4 inches in diameter, not including its wonderful original antique metal case. Having the case makes this piece even better ( and more collectable and valuable)!
In its case it measures approx. 2 3/4 inches in diameter.
I am no expert in antique medallions so I leave it to the prospective buyer to due his/her research if so desired... and I also encourage you to look closely at the many photos and if so desired ask questions, preferably before bidding.
In general, I do not accept returns. I am an honest eBayer but have had a couple problems with unscrupulous buyers in the past. I take returns if I give a false description but not if you decide you do not want it after it arrives or if your wife, husband, mother-in- law or family pet tells you to get it out of the house.
