    Description

Tenth President of the United States
    JOHN TYLER
    1841 – 1845
Vice President John Tyler was at his Virginia home when notified of President Harrison’s death. The first man elevated to the office of chief executive through the death of a president, Tyler was nicknamed the “Accidental President” by sardonic members of the press. His firm belief in states’ rights alienated his Whig constituents, and all but one of his Whig Cabinet members resigned when Tyles vetoed a bank bill. His most memorable accomplishment was the annexation of Texas. Tyler helped create the Southern Confederacy and died in 1862, shortly after being elected to the Confederate Congress.
