    Description

Sixth President of the United States
    JOHN QUINCY ADAMS
    1825 – 1829
John Quincy Adams’ eminent father was John Adams, our second president. Young John learned the art of politics while serving as his father’s secretary. After college and a short career in law, John Quincy was appointed minister to the Netherlands. He subsequently served in the United States Senate, and later as President Madison’s minister to Russia and President Monroe’s secretary of state. In 1824, sectional strife divided America’s sole political party, the Republican party. Thus Americans found themselves with several presidential candidates. None had an electoral majority and the election went to the House of Representatives. John Quincy Adams emerged victorious. As president, Adams worked for a national system of highways and canals, and urged Congress to establish a national university to promote the arts and sciences. Defeated in 1828 by Andres Jackson, Adams returned to Massachusetts and later served as a congressman.
