    Description

Thirty-fifth President of the United States
    JOHN F. KENNEDY
    1961 – 1963
One of America’s most popular modern-day presidents, John F. Kennedy was the youngest man to be elected president and the youngest man to die in office. He graduated from Harvard in 1940 and served in the Pacific Theater of World War II. Afterward, Kennedy entered the political arena as a Democratic congressman from Massachusetts. In 1956, Kennedy lost the nomination for Democratic candidate for vice president. But four short years later, he defeated Republican Richard Nixon to become America’s first Roman Catholic president. As president, Kennedy fended off the threat posed by nuclear weapons in nearby Cuba, waged a war for civil rights, offered the nation’s poor new hope and challenged the American people to reach the moon by the end of the decade. Tragically, Kennedy was shot down by an assassin on November 22, 1963.
