    Description

Second President of the United States
    JOHN ADAMS
    1797 – 1801
Scholar and philosopher, John Adams served as a diplomat during and after the Revolutionary War. Upon his return to American in 1788, he was elected vice president under George Washington. In 1797, he succeeded the illustrious general as president. Adams’ diplomatic skills served him well as chief executive. Relations between Britain and France had deteriorated alarmingly, and European tensions threatened the peace of the Unites States. When France suspended commercial relations with America and refused to receive an American envoy, President Adams recommended building a navy and recruiting a larger army. The president’s cautious actions led to peach with France and preserved America’s neutrality during the French Revolution. In 1800, Adams became the first to occupy the Executive Mansion, now called the White House, and wrote “May none but honest and wise Men ever rule under this roof.”
