    Description

Fifth President of the United States
    JAMES MOORE
    1817 – 1825
James Monroe rose to the American presidency though hard work, a dedicated spirit and rugged courage. The youngest of the Founding Fathers, Monroe served in the military during the Revolution, and afterward pursued careers in law and politics. Although his bid for the presidency in 1808 was unsuccessful, Monroe won both the Republican nomination and the election in 1817 with ease. His first term as president was popularly called “the era of good feelings”, disrupted only by the Panic of 1819. In diplomacy, Monroe’s four years were equally successful. In an effort to check Spain’s attempts to re-establish its empire in South America, he issued a stern warning to Europe that political or military interference in the American continents would not be tolerated by the United States. This policy, subsequently known as the Monroe Doctrine, has been invoked by many succeeding American presidents.
