    Description

Fourth President of the United States
    JAMES MADISON
    1809 – 1817
American author Washington Irving once called James Madison a “withered little apple-John”. But appearances were indeed deceiving, for Madison possessed one of history’s most astute political minds. A framer of the Constitution, often called its Father, Madison ensured its ratification by co-authoring the Federalist Papers. He also helped draft the Bill of Rights. Elected president in 1809, Madison steered America triumphantly through the War of 1812, during which the fledgling nation again battled Great Britain. Retiring to his estate in Virginia, Madison remained a staunch Federalist, hoping that the Union he helped create would be “cherished and protected”.
