    Description

Eleventh President of the United States
    JAMES K. POLK
    1845 – 1849
One of the most successful of all presidents, James K. Polk actually managed to fulfill all of this campaign promises. He vowed to reduce the tariff, establish an independent treasure, settle the Oregon border dispute and acquire California – and he did. Polk engineered a compromise between the United States and Great Britain which set Oregon’s boundary at the 49
    th
parallel. The acquisition of California cost America two years of war with Mexico, but victory and the subsequent Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo gave the United States territory that encompasses the present American southwest.
