    Description

Thirty-ninth President of the United States
    JAMES EARL CARTER, Jr.
    1977 – 1981
Born in Plains, Georgia, on October 1, 1924, James “Jimmy” Carter
    entered
state politics in 1962. Eight years later, he was governor of Georgia. In 1974 he began a successful campaign for the 1976 Democratic presidential nomination. A nation ready for change elected him president. Carter
    laboured
to control America’s high rate of inflation and unemployment. Deeply committed to world peace, Carter helped to foster amity between Egypt and Israel, and completed negotiation of the SALT II treaty with the Soviet Union. But these victories were overshadowed by mounting inflation and soaring interest rates at home. When Americans were taken hostage at the U.S. Embassy in Iran, Carter could not secure their release. A failed attempt to rescue the hostages, together with domestic economic woes, contributed to Carter’s defeat in 1980 in his bid for a second term.
