    A statesman with more than 40 years’ political experience, Buchanan fad run for president three times before 1857. His fourth try netted him the White House. Morally opposed to slavery, Buchanan was equally opposed to congressional interference in states’ rights. Hoping to preserve the Union, he granted one concession after another to Southern slave states. But his actions enraged Northerners, who saw him as just one more in a long line of presidential appeasers Unable to stem the rising tide of regional bitterness, Buchanan reverted to a policy of inactivity and declined to run again.
