Description
Thirty-first President of the United StatesHERBERT HOOVER
1929 – 1933
“Twenty million people are starving. Whatever their politics, they will be fed!” Such was President Hoover’s response to criticism of U.S. aid to famine stricken Soviet Russia. Skillful administrator and esteemed humanitarian, Herbert Hoover brought with him to the White House an exceptional record of achievement. Head of the Food Administration during World War I, Hoover later served on the Supreme Economic Council and as secretary of commerce for Presidents Harding and Coolidge. The Republican candidate in 1928, Hoover was in office but a few months when the stock market crashed. He sponsored many programs designed to help both businesses and the American public. But his efforts could not stave off the deepening economic depression, and Franklin Roosevelt soundly defeated him in the 1932 election.
