Thirty-third President of the United States
    HARRY S. TRUMAN
    1945 – 1953
With Franklin Roosevelt’s death, Vice President Harry Truman was suddenly thrust into the presidency. Four months into office, Truman made an agonizing decision and ordered the use of the atomic bomb on Japan. After two cities were obliterated, Japan surrendered. Turning his attention to domestic policies, Truman expanded Social Security and proposed programs for public housing. Although World War II was over, the Cold War had just begun. Truman responded to Soviet expansion and aggression with both the Truman Doctrine and the Berlin airlift. But another danger soon threatened. In 1950, North Korea invaded South Korea After guiding America through this conflict, Truman decided not to run again and retired to his home in Missouri.
