This is a very nice, scarce, Progress of 1839-1939
"Souvenir"
Medal
from the 1939-1940
"Golden Gate International Exposition"
that was held on Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay.
The Expo was held to celebrate the recent completion of the two famous bridges across San Francisco Bay. The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, which is a two-section bridge meeting on Yerba Buena island and giving auto access to the Exposition, was completed in 1936. And the more famous Golden Gate Bridge, at the time the longest single-span suspension bridge in the world, leading to Marin County, was finished in 1937.
The Federal Works Projects Administration
(W.P.A.)
built Treasure Island from land fill on the long-time navigational hazard, Yerba Buena Shoals, near Yerba Buena Island in San Francisco Bay. It was originally intended to house an Airport, to be used by the famed Pan-American Airways
"Clipper Ship"
service to the orient. The 400-acre island was used for the Exposition instead, and then it became a famous United States Navy base during and after World War II.

The Medal:
A less often seen souvenir of this exposition and still in nice condition. It has some roughness on the edge, but it does not affect the design. It is fully original, never cleaned. As grading is subjective, please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
