    Description

Thirty-eighth President of the United States
    GERALD R. FORD
    1973 – 1977
“…I am acutely aware that you have not elected me as your president by your ballots. So I ask you to confirm me as your president with your prayers.” With these words, Gerald R. Ford filled the presidency vacated by Richard Nixon. He was the first person ever to be chosen to replace a resigning vice president and the fist vice president to succeed a resigning president. Ford faced almost insurmountable odds, for he alone had to restore America’s faith in the presidency. He also faced the challenges of curbing inflation, solving energy shortages and trying to safeguard world peace. In domestic affairs, President Ford worked to stimulate the economy and help business operate more freely by reducing taxes. In foreign affairs., he wordk to improve America’s image and prestige abroad. In 1976, Ford lost his bid for re-election to Democrat Jimmy Carter.
