    Description

Thirty-second President of the United States
    FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT
    1933 – 1945
America’s helmsman during both the Great Depression and World War II, Franklin Roosevelt was a superlative leader whose inspiring messages gave Americans hope while his programs brought them economic relief. Theodore Roosevelt’s fifth cousin, Roosevelt came to the presidency via the New York Senate and governor’s office. Stricken with polio at age 39, Roosevelt never allowed his subsequent infirmity to slow him down. Elected in 1932 to the first of four terms, Roosevelt sponsored New Deal programs such as the Tennessee Valley Authority, Social Security and the Works Progress Administration. When Europe went to war, Roosevelt acceded to America’s desire for neutrality but quietly prepared the country for war and skillfully steered America through most of the conflict. But in 1945, his health worsened. He died of a cerebral hemorrhage on April 12.
