    Description

Thirty-fourth President of the United States
    DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER
    1953 – 1961
Born in Texas in 1890, Dwight Eisenhower was another in the long succession of military-hero presidents. After graduation from the United States Military Academy at West Point, Eisenhower learned to soldier under such military greats as John Pershing and Douglas MacArthur. During World War II, he commanded the Allied invasion of North Africa and was later appointed supreme commander for the D-Day invasion of France. President of Columbia University after the war, Eisenhower was the Republican presidential candidate in 1952. He swept the election and successfully ran again in 1956. As president, he continued many of FDR’s New Deal programs, oversaw the initial desegregation of schools and ordered the desegregation of the military. After leaving office in 1961, he retired to his farm in Pennsylvania.
