  • Condition: The brass draw shaft is in two halves, with clean separation at solder seam. However, it still pulls/retracts. Perhaps someone with a hot soldering gun could rejoin them, if necessary. Again, it works as is, but just so ya know. Even though this Spyglass is only one draw, it is threaded and unscrews to reveal at least three different pieces; maybe four. Brass shaft is moderately pitted, as shown in pics. Appears flange to eyepiece is gone, but eyepiece lense is present - and works just fine (pics of front/rear of eyepiece lense provided upon request). Leather manifests wear, and some tarnishing from brass, but holding up pretty well for what - 200+ years(?).

    Description

    Submitted for your consideration is an antique brass and leather SPYGLASS or TELESCOPE. This antique comes fresh from an estate sale, so I know very little about it, or Spyglasses and Telescopes, but similar are listed as "circa 1800", or 19th century, as Dollond of London Spyglasses were being copied from the get-go. So, authentic or copy, I am pretty comfortable with it being from the 1800s - possibly a little earlier.
    Etching on the brass shaft just behind eyepiece says - Dollond of London. Or is that Dolland, Dellond or maybe, Delland ??? My limited research revealed that Dollond Spyglasses have been copied & reproduced right from the get-go. This may be one such example, or it could be a real Dollond(?).
    If anyone more knowledgeable can shed some light on this piece, I would surely
    appreciate their time and effort.
    It appears to be a single-draw model that measures over 20" when collapsed, and nearly 31" fully extended. The large lense is just under 3" in diameter.
    This Spyglass still seems to work okay, but does have its share of cosmetic pitting, as evident in pics. The main cylinder is covered in dark brown leather, which is embossed "K. F. COGGINS"(?). I have yet to decipher who or what that means, other than it is likely to be a former owner. Preliminary research reveals a Captain Thomas Coggins from Blue Hill, Maine - who sailed during the American Revolution. Have no clue if there is any connection/relation to Captain Coggins, however. Maine is just next door to NH, but who knows?
    Again, if anyone knows something about this piece, I would surely appreciate hearing from them. Otherwise, it is what it is, and if that "is" is (my best Bill Clinton impersonation) a copy - then it's likely to be a very, very EARLY copy. On the other hand, if I could prove it was an actual Dollond of London, then the price would be a lot closer to 00. Regardless, I am accepting NO RETURNS on this piece.
