Obverse description: Laureate head of Augustus right.
Obverse translation: “Imperator Divi Filius”, (The imperator son of the divine).
Reverse legend: [COL - NEM].
Reverse description: Crocodile chained to a palm tree which is surmounted by a crown; under the crocodile, two palmettes.
Reverse translation: “Colonia Nemausus”, (Colony of Nîmes).
Comment about this coin: On this coin, the portrait of Augustus is particularly well struck and is in a very good style.
Comments: Faced with the monetary shortage which settled in Gaul from the end of the reign of Augustus and which was to last most of the reign of Tiberius, recourse was had to artifices. Coins from Lyon, Vienne, Narbonne, Orange or Nîmes with two heads whose value is then established at two aces or a dupondius will be cut vertically and will circulate for half their starting value, i.e. one ace. Heavier and older pieces from Lyon, Vienne, Narbonne and Orange will quickly disappear from the market because they have a weight premium. In circulation, only the coins of Nîmes remain, the weight of which tends to lighten. Cut, the dupondius of Nîmes became a totally fiduciary currency. These coins circulated widely in Gaul and were accepted for trade for most of the 1st century CE, until the reign of Nero (54-68), and possibly later still.
History: Nemausus (Nîmes) was the capital of the Arecomic Volques. According to the coinage, it is largely influenced by Marseilles. During the first century BC, in order to counterbalance the influence of Narbonne, did she support the revolt of Sertorius in Spain against Metellus and Pompey? The colony of Nîmes seems to have been founded by Tiberius Nero, the husband of Livia and the father of Tiberius and Drusus senior, in 45 or 44 BC. Some authors see it rather as a creation of Caesar himself on his return of the Spanish campaign. The city received the 'jus Latinum'. After the Battle of Actium in 31 BC, marking the victory of Octavian and Agrippa over the fleet of Mark Antony and Cleopatra and the conquest of Egypt the following year, Octavian demobilized part of his legions, which had become too numerous after the victory. The veterans received their 'honesta missio', a kind of pension in cash and in good funds. Many veterans came to settle in the province of Narbonnaise and a large contingent settled in Nîmes. The very important coinage which seems to begin from 27 BC shows the commercial dynamism of the city which became one of the richest in the region and which left us impressive monuments (the Pont du Gard, the Square House). The city changed status in 24 BC, becoming a Roman colony under the name of 'Colonia Augusta Nemausus' and dominating the territory of the Arecomic Volques.This coin is not a copy it is original strike.
