VINTAGE c1940s LAOU KAI FOOK SHANGHAI ADVERTISING FLYER
c1940s Vintage small advertisement/flyer for Shanghai's LAOU KAI FOOK & CO. 5x3 3/8 inches.  Very good condition, signed in pencil on the back: S. Y. Day. (The flyer was tucked into a book meant for foreigners and issued in the 1940s).
Laou Kai Fook & Co. was located at 257 Nanking Road in Shanghai, in the historic S. A Hardoon Building, which was built in 1935.  It was a well-known upper class silk and tailoring shop, originally established in 1860 by the Zhu Brothers.  Later it was purchased by Cheng Yongliu -- and the name Laou Kai Fook was derived by taking one name from each of the partners' nicknames.  In its day it was the city's largest silk shop, sometimes called "The King of Chinese Silk." The company made curtains, bedcovers and other good for the nearby Peace Hotel and was frequented by celebrities like Charlie Chaplin in the 1930s.  The building is a landmark and still exists today.  (From: Shanghai Today Nov. 10, 2017).
