    Description

Seventh President of the United States
    ANDREW JACKSON
    1829 – 1837
As a young boy in the Revolutionary War, Andrew Jackson and his brother were taken prisoners by the British. Although only 13, young Andrew refused to polish a British officer’s boots and promptly received a harsh saber blow to his head. This single act demonstrated the strong character and courage that eventually led Jackson to the White House. No friend of the British, he joined the fight against England in the War of 1812, where his toughness and fighting spirit in battle earned him the nickname “Old Hickory” and made him a national hero. In 1828 Jackson ran for president and won by an overwhelming majority of the popular vote. As president, Jackson used his dynamic personality to strengthen the office and asserted his power against any policy that gave special privileges to the rich.
