Marcia Otacilia Severa was the wife of Emperor Marcus Julius Philippus (“Philip I”or "Philip the Arab”) This royal couple is considered by some the first Christian Imperial rulers due to their efforts to minimize or avoid persecution of Christians. Otacilia was a devoted wife and mother, bearing three children: Philip II, Julia Severina, and Quintus Philippus Severus. Sadly, upon the death of her husband in battle with usurper Trajan Decius circa 249 the Praetorian Guard in Rome purportedly killed her son Marcus Julius Philippus Severus (“Philip II”), who was only 12 years old at the time. This was to eliminate him as a claimant to the throne and ensure Trajan Decius’ position as the new emperor. Otacilia survived and purportedly fled to Aliya Shamsan, the birthplace of her husband where she lived peacefully, no longer involved in Roman politics.
The L-Γ in the field around the eagle is the date of issue. “L” is an abbreviation for year and Γ (gamma) is the third letter in the Greek alphabet. This denotes regnal year 3 of Philip I which overlapped the years 245 and 246 CE
.
This scarce, high relief, Alexandria issue of Otacilia is in especially nice condition for coins of this type. A great find.
