This is a large,
"So-Called Dollar"
size, 1975 Tombstone, Arizona
"Commemorative Medal"
from Tombstone, Arizona. Because of what happened there,
"The Town Too Tough To Die"
is perhaps the most famous town from the American
"Old West"
.
In 1881 Wyatt, Morgan and Virgil Earp, with the notorious
"Doc"
Holiday took on the
"Clanton Gang"
in the famous
"Gunfight at the O.K. Corral"
. After it was over there were a few new residents of
"Boot Hill"
which is actually the name of the local cemetery.
"Helldorado Days"
are celebrated each year in Tombstone with reenactments of the famous
“Gunfight”
. This 1975 medal was produced as part of a set of commemoratives. It began in 1968 and different obverse designs with the common reverse were issued and dated yearly from then until 1978.

In 1877, a prospector named Ed Schieffelin left Fort Huachuca, Arizona Territory headed for the Dragoon Mountains. The soldiers warned him that the only thing he would find there would be his own tombstone. When he found silver, he named his mine
"Tombstone"
and the town still lives.

The Medal:
A big, impressive, very well-preserved piece. It has some light toning and a few spots but is mostly bright white and fully, brilliantly lustrous, a very nice piece overall. As grading is subjective please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
