    Description

    1933 / 1934 Chicago World's Fair / Century Of Progress
Huge 70mm / 138.8 gram Research & Industry Bronze Medal
With (Probable) Unique Rim Engraving - "James A. Kearns City Treasurer".  This exact medal must have been presented to him personally during his tenure as City of Chicago Treasurer, a position he held from 1931-1935.
James A. Kearns emigrated from County Mayo, Ireland in 1883, becoming a lawyer in Chicago where he served as Alderman, Clerk of Court and City Treaurer (the second ranking official in Chicago at the time).  He was known as "Weeping Jim" because of his propensity for attending Irish wakes.  He was recognized as "Father of the Chicago flag" because he introduced a resolution in 1915 calling for a flag in a city which up to that time did not have one.
