depicts a tank crossing a barricaded trench and guarded by a floating bare-breasted, sword-wielding Marianne above. Signed along edge at 8 o’clock position: A.MORLON.
    Reverse:
un-awarded/blank circular ring at center suspended by four straps within a floral wreath/field.
    In his book
    “The Art of the Medal”
(1979), Mark Jones notes that Pierre Alexandre Morlon “attempted to adapt a decorative and sentimental style to an ugly and brutal war” (WWI)… which “resulted in inevitably incongruous juxtapositions between the sinuous lines of nineteenth-century drapery and the inelegant forms of modern weaponry in, for example, Morlon’s medal of a tank.”
The tank depicted on the obverse is the second French heavy tank, the “Saint-Chamond M16”. It first saw action during the April 1917 Aisne Offensive and was, by all accounts, a complete failure. The listing image of the tank is for reference and information purposes only and is not part of this sale.
