Description
This is a beautiful, fully original, official

"City of Verdun"
in France to the Allied Soldiers who fought in the famous battle during World War I.
Verdun was one of the most famous and critical battles in the entire war on the
"Western Front"
. It was fought between the German and French allied armies from February 21 to December 18, 1916
(
almost the entire year.)
around the city of Verdun-sur-Meuse in northeast France. It resulted in more than a quarter of a million deaths and at least a million wounded. Verdun was the longest battle and one of the bloodiest in World War I.
Medal Weight: 22.87 Gram, 37 Millimeter, Bronze.

Émile Séraphin Vernier was
a French sculptor, metal worker, engraver and medalist. He was president of the
“Société des artistes décorateurs”
.
Whereas the French government issued Campaign Military Medals, it did not issue Medals for battles or events within a campaign. For this reason, the medal is considered a
“Commemorative”,
issued by the City of Verdun as a gesture of honoring the courageous soldiers who saved the city.
In November of 1916, the Mayor of Verdun instituted a medal to be awarded to veterans of the French or Allied armies who served between July 31, 1914, and November 11, 1918, in the Verdun sector between the Argonne and Saint-Mihel. This is one of those medals.

The
“Golden Book Commission”
issued a medal and certificate to those who qualified. The first medals were non-wearable 37mm examples in a leather pouch. This was the only official medal that the Commission issued. Many different copies, some wearable on ribbons, were made later. Only the official Medals had the 1917 date on the obverse.
The Medal:
A beautiful piece, the original winner of this probably kept it his whole life. It has aged gracefully and only has a few small marks. Fully original, it has not been cleaned. As grading is subjective, please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
