    Description

This is a white metal pinback badge with a dark blue & yellow silk ribbon. Issued in 1899 for an Admiral Dewey reception which occurred in New York on September 28-29 in 1899. A rare metal badge issued for this special two day event. The circular medal shows highly detailed busts of Dewey & Schley which have a lovely frosty surface (as issued). The surface on the busts reminds me of the look you would expect to see on a matt proof coin. This contrasts quite attractively with the blazing highly reflective proof-like fields of the medal.
The medal has the wording on the front: "Manilla Bay May 1," & "Santiago July 3, 1898". On the back is the wording: "You Can Commence Firing As Soon As You Are Ready May 1, 1898" & "There Is Glory Enough For All July 3, 1898".
This badge in entirety measures 3 5/8 inches long. The circular medal component has a diameter of 1 1/2 inches. The bar across the top has the word "Souvenir" is 1 1/2 inches wide. The bronze bar is mint & the ribbon is mint.
The white metal circular medal component is in gorgeous bright blazing Mint condition & has a highly reflective proof-like surface. It is very unlikely that you will ever find another example of this rare badge in equal condition. This is a recent find from an early New Jersey estate where it had resided carefully sequestered for 120 years since it's issue in 1899.
