1898 CINCINNATI 32nd Encampment GRAND ARMY of the REPUBLIC & ADMIRAL DEWEY Medal
Description
This is a large, bronze, combination, September 5-10, 1898,
"32nd National Encampment"
of the
"Grand Army of the Republic"
at Cincinnati, Ohio and
"Admiral Dewey"
Medal.
The
"Grand Army of the Republic"
was a fraternal organization composed of veterans of the Union Army, Navy, Marines and the Revenue Cutter Service who served in the Civil War. It was founded in 1866 at Decatur, Illinois. It was dissolved in 1956 when its last surviving member, Albert Henry Woolson, died at the age of 109 on August 2. Linking men through their experience of the war, the GAR became among the first organized advocacy groups in American politics.
Weight: 17.55 Gram, 37 Millimeter, Bronze.

(General Reference)
.
Obverse:
ADMIRAL DEWEY • Admiral George Dewey in uniform.
At this time Admiral George Dewey was the
"National Hero"
. On May 1, 1898, this year, he had given the now famous order
"You may fire when ready, Gridley"
and thus began the
"Battle of Manila Bay"
in the then
"Spanish"
Philippine Islands. It was the first major engagement of the
"Spanish-American War"
which had begun April 21. The battle was one of the most decisive naval battles in history and marked the end of the Spanish colonial period in Philippine history.
The war had just ended, on August 13, and this piece by the GAR must be one of the earliest
"Dewey Medals"
. When Dewey got back to New York he was mobbed. Wined, dined and celebrated, by the time he got to Washington his right hand was in agony. President McKinley, who, when he felt the weight of responsibility for the Philippines land unexpectedly on his shoulders, had said
"Why couldn't Dewey have just sailed away?"
now did him the favor of teaching him how to avoid getting his hand crushed when meeting the public.

The Medal:
It has been removed from a mount and I think it spent some time in the ground. It now has a smooth, even brown patina like an ancient coin. As grading is subjective, please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
