WORLDS'S COLUMBIAN EXPOSITION OFFICIAL AWARD MEDAL, 1893.Eglit 90; Baxter 87; Marqusee 348. 76.3 mm. Bronze. Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Sc. (obverse) and Charles E. Barber, Sc. (reverse). Struck by Scovill Manufacturing Co., Waterbury, CT. Uncirculated, with a beautiful Mahogany/medium chocolate patina rarely found in this condition!

with full length figure of Columbus stepping ashore on the soil of the New World. Inscription in the top right field: PLVS/ VLTRA/ CHRISTOPHER/ COLVMBVS/ OCT.XII/ MCCCCXCII. Signed at bottom center: AVGVSTVS

The medal is housed in its original hinged floral-designed aluminum presentation case of issue with dark blue velvet-lined interior and is accompanied with the original card that reads: WORLD'S COLUMBIAN EXPOSITION/ AWARD MEDAL/ AND/ ALUMINUM CASE/ MADE BY/ SCOVILL MANUFACTURING COMPANY/ WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT/ U.S.A. Both the case and card are in excellent condition.
The history and design of this medal has been studied extensively in numismatic circles and a very thorough twenty-two page article/booklet copy by Thayer Tolles titled: “
A Bit of Artistic Idealism”: Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ World’s Columbian Exposition Commemorative Presentation Medal
, ANS, 1997, is included with the medal.
The World's Columbian Exposition Official Award Medal, along with an award diploma/certificate designed by Will H. Low, was finally circulated to prize winners in April 1896, a full two and half years after the fair’s closing. Scovill Manufacturing Co. furnished a total of 23,757 medals for the World's Columbian Exposition.
