1837 G. BRITAIN Satirical CUMBERLAND JACK Derogatory "TO HANOVER" Medal or TOKEN
Description
This is one of the original, derogatorily satirical
"Cumberland Jack"
tokens or medalettes from Great Britain. It was struck in 1837 during the reign of Queen Victoria. She was Queen of Great Britain from 1837 until 1901. Queen Victoria reigned for 63 years, 7 months, and 3 days, at that time the longest reign in English history.
The story of this Token - Medalette:
From the end of the Stuart dynasty in 1714 until the death of King William IV in 1837 the
"Hanoverian Dynasty"
ruled Great Britain as well as Hanover in Germany. They still
"rule"
as the World War I period renamed
"House of Windsor"
in Great Britain today.
Victoria was eighteen when she became Queen on June 20, 1837. However, she was unable to succeed to the throne of Hanover because of the
"Salic Law"
that said a woman could not rule. The throne of Hanover went to her Uncle, Ernest Augustus, the
"Duke of Cumberland"
. He was the fifth son of King George III and the younger brother of both George IV and William IV. He became
"King Ernest Augustus I"
of Hanover in 1837. He was very unpopular in Britain because of his outspoken opposition to parliamentary reform. This piece derisively
"celebrated"
his removal from the scene.
Weight: 3.72 Gram, 23 Millimeter, Brass or Copper.
"A History of Modern English Coinage"

Obverse:
VICTORIA REGINA •
Victoria Queen.
• An adaptation of William Wyon's
"Young"
head of Queen Victoria with two fillets or headbands. • Die crack from edge to C in name.
Reverse:
TO HANOVER • In exergue the date 1837 • A parody of Benedetto Pistrucci's famous St. George slaying the Dragon reverse used on the Sovereigns of Great Britain and on modern coins. It shows the crowned Duke of Cumberland, Ernest Augustus, mounted and advancing right, holding a sword, not slaying but accompanying, a three-headed dragon who lopes along below.
The Medalette:
A well detailed, still presentable example with a neat dragon. It has some surface roughness and it has seen some hands, so it must have circulated, probably as a farthing, because it shows light wear. As grading is subjective, please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
