Description
This is an interesting, veteran,
“Commemorative”,
copper or brass,
"Jetton"
or Counter from France. It is dated 1669 and pictures François de Vendôme, duc de Beaufort.
François de Vendôme, duc de Beaufort was a prominent figure in the
“Fronde”
a French Civil War, and later went on to fight the Turks in the Mediterranean. In March of 1665 he led a small fleet which defeated a small Algerian fleet near the Goletta in Tunisia. In 1669 he led the newly arrived French troops defending Candia against the Ottoman Turks, and was killed in a night sortie, on June 25, 1669. His body was brought back to France for a state funeral.
“Jettons”
sometimes circulated as low-value coins but mostly they were used as counters for games or by moneychangers and merchants to facilitate the calculations made necessary by all the different types of coins then in circulation. If you think about the difficulty presented by gold, silver and copper coins with differing denominations, from all the many countries in Europe, it is easy to see how these would come in handy.

Reverse:
EX • DVCE • SIDVS • HABET. •/• 1669 • A compass on the ground under trees, clouds and one star larger than the eight other smaller stars.
The Jetton:
A long serving veteran. Fully original however, it has never been cleaned. As grading is subjective, please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
